Blog Home
D.J. Morgan D.J. currently serves on Experience Mission (EM) U.S. staff as Creative & Marketing Director, helping connect volunteers to opportunities to serve and grow together on mission trips.

Every year, we get incredibly excited to welcome volunteers to learn and serve in communities across the U.S. We hope you and your group are ready to come with open eyes to see and understand life in different communities as well as open hands to give of your time and resources to encourage and support the awesome work being done in these communities year-round. The following is a list of Experience Mission's best domestic mission trip opportunities for groups in 2027!

Best Domestic Mission Trips 2027

1. Experience Life & Faith in the Diné/Navajo Nation

Serving alongside Pastor JR Wilson Jr.'s congregation at House of Joy Church in Arizona is a window into an entirely different culture within the U.S. borders. Volunteer groups have opportunities to share the love of God not simply through work projects, but also by taking the time to listen and learn from Navajo people. Come and experience life and faith in rural communities where culture, traditions, and family mean so much, and God is moving in ways you wouldn’t expect.

2. Serve Rural Mountain Communities in Kentucky

Bring your team to serve in places rarely covered by the news. In the rural Appalachia community of Pikeville, Kentucky, EM teams partner with local chaplain Rob Musick, who connects volunteers to work projects and outreach across Pike County. Experience a slower pace of life as you learn about the area's economic history and get to know local families through home repair projects and honest conversation. For those living in the eastern half of the country, this community offers an easy and meaningful way to serve without air travel. Simplify your 2027 mission trip plans and join us to serve and grow together in Appalachia.

3. Relief and Support in Puerto Rico

For the feel of an international mission trip without the unknown of international travel, bring your group to serve on a mission trip to Puerto Rico in 2027. As a territory of the United States, Puerto Rico is a remarkably easy place to travel for all citizens of the U.S. But it is also still reeling from a series of natural disasters over the last 10 years, and much of the work of recovery has fallen to local communities and organizations helping families rebuild in the years since Hurricane Maria. On your mission trip, you'll partner with Puerto Rican-led ministries like The Family Church in Rincón, led by Pastor Jose Garcia, serving their neighbors one house and neighborhood at a time.

4. Urban Missions in New York City and Chicago

Bring your team to serve in two very different urban settings: New York City and Chicago. In New York, EM teams partner with The Salvation Army's Manhattan Citadel and New York Temple, supporting a daily food pantry, ongoing kids' programs, and neighborhood outreach that connects volunteers directly with people navigating homelessness and food insecurity. In Chicago, EM partners with Sunshine Gospel Ministries on the South Side, where teams take part in guided conversations about inequity and reconciliation, and hands-on projects like community gardening and neighborhood beautification—all led by local voices with over a century of ministry in the city. Both trips ask your team to come ready to listen and learn alongside people already doing the work of renewal in their own neighborhoods.

5. Experience Life on the Border in South Texas

Put your preconceived notions about immigration or border walls aside and see the real faces of people impacted by these realities on a daily basis. EM partners with Border Perspective, a faith-based ministry founded by former EM staff, to connect your team with immigrant families from Mexico and Central America through local churches and ministries providing food, clothes, hygiene kits, and more. These are reminders to each person that they matter. Along the way, you'll learn more about Mexican culture, what drives people to seek asylum, and day-to-day life on the southern border. You will not regret this opportunity to experience these realities firsthand.

6. Encourage Outreach of the Local Church in North Carolina

Tucked into North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, Marion is an Appalachian community where neighbors know each other by name, even as many residents navigate housing disrepair, aging in place, and limited resources. EM's week-long mission trips to Marion join in work already underway by the local church, anchored by a daily Kids Club for local children. Teams may also help with home repairs for elderly residents, support at a local children's home, or serve alongside people experiencing homelessness, depending on the week's needs. These projects offer practical support while creating space to build relationships and reflect God's presence already at work in the community.

7. Support Struggling Families & Residents in Georgia

EM's week-long mission trips to Savannah, Georgia, now center on Old Savannah City Mission, a faith-based shelter that offers meals, showers, and housing to friends and neighbors experiencing homelessness in the city. Teams stay on-site and serve alongside the Mission's staff, building relationships with residents while also supporting the City of Savannah's home repair program for local families facing housing insecurity. This trip pairs relational ministry with practical service, and opens your team's eyes to a side of Savannah most visitors never see.

8. See God at Work in Foster Care Ministry in Michigan

Muskegon, Michigan, is a close-knit community where local families are stepping up to foster kids who need safe homes, with over 400 children in the area currently in foster care. EM's week-long mission trips join local partner Kids Belong in supporting these foster and kinship families. During your stay, you'll help with projects that create more housing for foster kids, take on yard work and household chores that stretched families haven't had time for, and may lead a Kids Club-style outreach for local kids. These projects offer practical relief for families carrying a heavy load, and a chance to build relationships alongside a community already showing up for its own.

9. Come Alongside Neighbors & Refugees in Maine

Portland is Maine's largest city and a historic port, but it's also home to one of the fastest-growing refugee populations in the country, with families from Somalia, Sudan, and beyond rebuilding their lives. EM's mission trips to Portland join local organizations already loving and serving their neighbors: serving in the soup kitchen at Preble Street, supporting refugee families through The Root Cellar's kids and job programs, and sorting medical supplies for under-resourced clinics overseas with Partners for World Health. These projects offer practical support to organizations already in motion, and a chance for your team to build relationships across cultural lines.

10. Support a Flood-Ravaged Community in Central Texas

Join EM's mission trips to the Central Texas community of Marble Falls, in the heart of Burnet County, where flooding from a July 2025 disaster continues to affect daily life. EM teams partner with the Ark of Highland Lakes, a nonprofit uniting 44 local churches to support families in crisis across the Highland Lakes region. During your stay, you'll help with community outreach and events, warehouse support and donation distribution, and small building projects tied to the area's long-term recovery. These trips are available year-round and open to teams of all sizes.

11. Come Alongside Rural Support Ministries in Tennessee

Newport, Tennessee, is still recovering from Hurricane Helene, which hit this Appalachian community hard in 2024. EM's mission trips here have grown out of that relief work into an ongoing partnership with several local ministries already serving Newport's families. Teams pack and distribute food with Breadbasket, prepare and share meals with guests through Feed My Sheep, and support additional partners like Options Pregnancy Center, Isaiah 117 House, and Cornerstone Baptist Church Ministries — sorting donations, running kids' programs, and building relationships one conversation at a time.
