What to Consider Before You Choose a Trip
Before picking a location, weigh these three factors so the trip fits your students and your team:
- Budget - Middle school students typically rely more on parent contributions and may need help fundraising. Set a budget your students, church, and supporters can work with before picking a location, since transportation costs vary by community. EM trip fees typically include lodging, food, and project materials on every trip, plus ground transportation on international trips.
- Chaperones - Great chaperones are essential. They act as extra drivers, worksite leaders, behavior support, and mentors for one-on-one conversations as students process their experience. We recommend a ratio of 6:1, six middle school students for every adult.
- Appropriate challenges - Middle school students are all at different points in growing and maturing. Choose a trip that meets your students where they are and gives them meaningful, age-appropriate ways to serve.

Pike County, KY
Your middle school students will have the opportunity to engage with their peers while investing in the town of Pikeville, Kentucky. Trips here encompass a wide range of activities including construction projects, Kids Club, nursing home visits, and so much more. Outreach programs often involve local kids and pre-teens, so your team will have opportunities to do more than just serve, they will build meaningful friendships with their peers in rural Kentucky.

Marion, North Carolina
In the Appalachian community of Marion, North Carolina, your team will participate in Kids Club for local children and may also help with home repairs for elderly residents, support at a local children's home, or serve at a homeless shelter. In October 2025, Hurricane Melissa devastated communities across Jamaica, and your team can be part of the long rebuilding process in Catadupa and Cambridge. They'll have the opportunity to live the local way, lead Kids Clubs, and participate in construction projects while getting to know local families and teens. While we partner with a network of Spanish-speaking churches, this is a great introductory experience because most young people in Belize speak English, as it's the official language and used in school systems across the country.

Per-person costs for EM mission trips range from $475 to $995 (2027 pricing). For team members, this cost includes lodging, food, and project materials on every trip, plus ground transportation on international trips. Additional costs like transportation/airfare to the community and optional personal supplies are not included.
What safety measures are in place for middle school students?
All EM mission trip activities, partners, and communities are vetted for safety and personally chosen by local community members who know their communities well. During each trip, EM requires a 6:1 student-to-adult ratio, and every member of EM Field Staff is certified in First Aid and CPR. Each mission trip site has a medical kit for general accidents and ailments, and international locations also carry a trauma kit. If a team member becomes ill or injured, EM staff follow a clear emergency response plan based on severity, contacting parents or guardians and securing appropriate medical care. Team members are responsible for their own medical coverage, and international travelers are encouraged to carry additional travel insurance.
Does my student need mission trip experience before going?
No prior experience is needed on EM mission trips! Our trips are designed to meet students where they are, using the skills and experience they already have, with chaperones and staff providing guidance every step of the way.
