A Gap Year With Experience Mission isn't just pressing pause on life. It's a season built around serving others, growing in your faith, and discovering who God created you to be in the world.

What Are EM's Best Christian Gap Year Programs for 2027-2028?

Experience Mission (EM) offers five IMMERSION Gap Year programs for 2027-2028, ranging from six to nine months in communities across South Texas, the Dine (Navajo) Nation, Uganda, Costa Rica, Peru, South Africa, Lesotho, and Namibia. Ages vary by program: EM's flagship Missions and Discipleship Gap Year is exclusively for 18- to 20-year-olds, and the other four welcome ages 18 to 30. Every program pairs daily service alongside local partners with real space for reflection and growth.

Why Take a Gap Year Before College or Career?

A year built around service, reflection, and travel isn't a decision to skip college. It's often the clearest path toward it. According to the Gap Year Association, 90% of gap year students return to college within a year, frequently posting higher GPAs and graduating faster than peers who enrolled straight out of high school. For Christian young adults, a Gap Year adds something deeper: a chance to make those decisions out of a deepening faith, shaped by real relationships and a clearer sense of who God made you to be.

What Makes an EM Gap Year Different?

On an EM Gap Year, you arrive as a guest, not a fixer. Local partners have been loving and serving their own communities long before your team lands, and they'll keep doing that work long after you leave. Instead of showing up with answers, IMMERSION participants practice showing up with humility: living in the rhythms of daily life, building relationships across cultures and languages, and looking for God in the people who are hardest to understand at first.

Gap Year FAQs

What's the difference between a 6-month and a 9-month Gap Year?

The main difference is not in length, but between the Missions & Discipleship Gap Year compared to other programs. The Missions & Discipleship Gap Year is designed exclusively for 18- to 20-year-olds around four specific communities: South Texas, the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Uganda, and Costa Rica. Other IMMERSION Gap Year programs run for 6 or 9 months and welcome ages 20-30, with some opportunities combining two distinct IMMERSION programs into 1 Gap Year experience. All IMMERSION trips share the same approach to service, formation, and faith, with the 18- to 20-year-old program building in more hands-on direction and group learning. In contrast, programs for older young adults offer more independence and focus on day-to-day serving experiences.

Do I need mission trip experience to join an IMMERSION Gap Year program?

No. EM's Gap Year programs are built for first-time mission trip participants as well as young adults with more experience serving internationally. Training and team-building happen before you depart, and local partners are ready to guide your team once you arrive.

How much does an IMMERSION Gap Year cost, and is fundraising support available?

Program costs for 2027-2028 range from $12,500 to $19,950, depending on length and countries visited. EM's IMMERSION team helps participants build a fundraising plan and connects them with resources to invite family, friends, and church communities to support them along their journey.

Can I choose which countries or communities I serve in?

Yes, to a point! Each Gap Year program has a set itinerary of communities, so choosing a program means choosing its specific route. If you're deciding between Gap Year opportunities, an IMMERSION staff member can help match your goals and calling to the right program after you Submit an Interest Form.

What happens after I submit an interest form?

A member of Experience Mission's staff team will follow up to answer your questions, talk through your goals, and help you figure out whether a specific Gap Year program is the best next step for you.
