Challenging in the Best Ways

Blog Home
by Julia Greif Julia is a full-time member of the EM Africa staff, leading IMMERSION teams in southern Africa throughout the year, including last year's 1-month trip to Mozambique.

Last summer, a team of young adults ventured to the southern Africa country of Mozambique to live with host families and serve alongside the local church in reaching out to their community. The team had an incredible experience. Below are a few of their reflections on the trip. I hope they encourage you to check out this trip for yourself this year!

"My time in Mozambique was challenging in the best of ways. I learned so much about myself, other people, and most importantly about the amazing God we serve. My heart was filled with love and joy but also with heartbreak and sadness. Spending a month in Mozambique gave me the desire to change the world while letting the world change me and by loving and being loved by the people that I met through that process, I can confidently say that I took one step towards world change for the glory of God. So many people have asked me if I’d ever go back and my answer is always the same: In a heartbeat.”

1-Month Africa Mission Trips

"Mozambique grew me in a lot of ways and there were lessons in the smallest things. Community doesn’t always mean talking or understanding the language. Community means sitting with each other, laughing and embracing the awakes silences. I enjoyed the simplicity of Mozambique; the smiles of the children; the hard work put in day in and day out. The way I grew to love those people in one month was perplexing to me. They hold a special place in my heart."
- Bekah Jerman

"My time in Mozambique was like nothing else I’ve ever experienced. I felt true joy and love being in the presence of people that had more happiness to share than I could’ve imagined...

...They took care of me like their own family and taught me their way of life day by day. I walked in faith while learning a new culture and living as a true Mozambique woman alongside my team. I would give anything to go back and relive it!"
- Kayla Lambert

"My time in Mozambique was proof that God will break down any barriers so His love can flow in. There aren’t a lot of words to say the way God moved in Mozambique but from the young kids to the adults, there was honest and pure moments of who God is and His love for all of the people there. From the bush to all of the villages, it’s an experience I’ll never forget. There is no greater joy than to share His love together."

1-Month Africa Mission Trips

"Mozambique was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had, I have been on other mission trips before but this specific trip stole my heart. I went on this trip thinking I was going to serve the community through hands-on activity and instead we did something greater. We built relationships that will last a lifetime. We got to experience African life and how God works through the people of Mozambique. There was a language barrier but the language of our Father remained the same. I really got to encounter God and see who He really was. I had a hard time grasping the fact that the life in Mozambique is slower and every day looks different, but I was able to let God take lead and show Himself through it. These people work so hard and are constantly hit with some kind of storm but their love for Jesus cannot be shaken down. I learned that everything can be stripped from you, but the relationship you have with Jesus, no one can take that from you."

Until I Am Overflowing
At first we didn't believe it was real—but this is what we had hoped for, this is what we had been anticipating for the last six weeks. We turned up our palms and waited in silence, hanging our heads back to stare at the clouds.

I must remind myself that we have been given an incredible opportunity to serve through everyday activities, to be a part of grassroots missions and something that is much more important than it appears on the surface.
