Starting the Work in Houston

Blog Home
by Yonathan Moya Yonathan is a full-time member of EM's U.S. staff, serving as the regional coordinator for Latin America and Texas.

This isn’t the first time our team has walked into the aftermath of a natural disaster, but coming to Houston after Hurricane Harvey was different. Texas is my home state and several of my friends and family members currently live in the Houston area, which made this trip more personal.

The air was hot and humid as our team walked through a devastated neighborhood. In some areas, you could smell the mold in the air, and the smell grew stronger as we walked past piles of ruined personal belongings on the side of the road.

This was the same week when Hurricane Irma was hitting the Florida coast. I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed as we learned more about the Houston communities still under water and about families who couldn’t afford flood insurance, had lost everything, and now had extensive rebuilding needs after the storm passed.

Texas Relief Mission Trips

I was encouraged by our initial meetings and the direction our conversations were heading. With our commitment to partner long-term in the rebuilding process with St. Andrews, a local church in the Houston area, our focus will be to serve alongside the marginalized, under-resourced and forgotten families who are completely disconnected and remain in the shadows. St. Andrews had their local congregation mobilized right after the rain stopped. Volunteers worked long days and hours to engage in serving their neighbors. Our vision to partner together and continue to love and serve families around the Houston area re-energizes me and brings me renewed hope.

Texas Relief Mission Trips

There is a lot of work to be done in Houston and the surrounding area. We invite you to partner with us in the rebuilding process as we commit to loving families who are often forgotten.

Texas Relief Mission Trips

Experience Mission is currently sending teams of volunteers to serve families in the Houston area on Relief Mission Trips. We are excited about the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ to families who have lost everything after Hurricane Harvey flooded their homes.

Unable to serve on a relief trip this year? Donate toward our Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. 100% of donations will go toward the rebuilding efforts in under-served communities!
