Living Our Mission in Kentucky

Blog Home

by Aly Bufton, EM Summer Staff in Kentucky

Last week we hosted a mission trip team of 38 from Sarasota, Florida. They were such an awesome group of people, and they worked so hard. We worked on our usual homes—Susie's home and one with Habitat for Humanity, and we continued working at Debbie and Winston's, re-insulating and dry walling their kitchen. While working on those projects, we also had a group at the Appalachian Pregnancy Center working on painting the ceilings, and we began work at two different trailers in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, which is about 40 minutes north of Pikeville.

While in Prestonsburg, we worked at Tom and Versa's reworking their bathroom floors and fixing some support beams under the trailer, and we worked at Tony and Ryan's trailer on sub-flooring. These two new families we had the opportunity to get to know were incredible! Tom and Versa had a big dog named Hotchi and a beautiful daughter Carley. Tony and Ryan had 12 dogs at their home, including an eight-week-old puppy (E.O., short for Mario!), and we got to meet their two sons, daughter-in-law, and two grandkids. Not only was this week awesome for getting work done, but we really had the privilege to take some time to get to know these families as well.

While we were sad to see this group go, I know that Adam, Rubie, and I will stay in touch with this group for much longer than just one week. Like many other teams, we were able to see the relationship grow within the community and within the group. Here are some photos from the week!

The team was able to meet with our Habitat coordinator, Brent, before starting work at Susie's. They were already ready to get up on the roof and start the shingles.

Susie's favorite joke to make last week was that there was not one 'shingle' complaint. :) Susie is so good at making each person feel special and so loved while they are working on her home.

Not only did they get the whole roof shingled, but they were able to get under the house and do some insulation.

The demolition in Debbie and Winston's kitchen looked like a bigger mess than it was. Our team was so diligent about getting the walls and ceiling down, cleaning up, and doing the dry wall.

Not only did the kitchen have work done, but their swing outside was able to get a fresh coat of paint. Debbie chose blue because it is her granddaughter's favorite color :)

The team was able to play corn hole, uno, and do karaoke at the nursing home.

Painting at the Pregnancy Center continued! The garage doors got a fresh coat of paint, and the ceilings inside continued to be done.

This is Mark (team member) and Peggy (nursing home resident). She took a real liking to Mark last week and even introduced him to her daughter as her son. What a sweet, sweet blessing Mark provided last week to a beautiful resident.

David got to work alongside with Tom on his home. He not only learned how to put in support beams and sub floor a bathroom, but he also had the great opportunity to get to know Tom better and learn from him. That's what EM mission trips are all about!
