Vibrant colors. Dancing. Joy. Hands stretched towards heaven. People clamoring for the presence of the Holy Spirit. This is what you see when you walk into a casa-culto on a Sunday morning.
Casa-culto is the terminology used here in Cuba referring to the house-church movement. The government’s limitation on building new church buildings after the revolution in the 1960s has not stopped our Cuban brothers and sisters from worshipping the evermore powerful God from their pastor’s backyard that became a place of gathering for believers, thus creating what is now known as a house church.
It is beautiful, and I am thankful to be a member of the body of Christ on this island where people come together to praise God for His faithfulness and provision. I have been to several different churches in my time here, but not a single church omits the time to allow members to share their testimony and words of thankfulness before the beginning of the service. Cubans know what it really is to not have the true necessities.
What sets our brothers and sisters in Cuba apart from ordinary believers is their attitude of seeking the kingdom of God before they seek the physical needs of their flesh. They turn their desperations towards God because they realize and believe whole-heartedly that God is a God of supernatural Being. My Cuban friends are so good in reminding me that we cannot serve God when we put Him into a box and limit His omnipotence.
We cannot truly serve Him until we fully acknowledge our need for His presence, provision, and guidance in anything and everything we do.
Today, I write to remind my future self to never cease finding joy in praising God for his goodness and greatness with other believers placed in my life. And let others see Christ radiating through our joy and love for His creation.
