My Story
There comes a point in everyone’s life when they ask themselves, “Who will I become?” For me, that has been an underlying question for the last few years. Everyone grows up with big dreams for their future, but honestly, looking back I can't even remember what I wanted to be. Flash forward a few years, I graduated from Dordt College in 2017. I knew I didn't want a mundane job just to pay the bills. I wanted to serve God, doing something meaningful that was far greater than myself. For the last 2 years I have been working for a ministry called LifeLight and it has been a great experience for me! But after a while, I have become restless. A kind of restless that can only be calmed by following God's will!
In January of 2019, I attend the CROSS Conference where I was challenged with the idea of missions. Never had I thought about going into missions; Never had I thought that I would even entertain the idea...Funny how life works, because here I am, a few months later, raising money to go on a 6-month mission trip to poverty stricken areas through Experience Mission (EM).
During this trip, I will experience everything from the bustling city to the edge of the rainforest in three radically different cultures: Haiti, Belize, and Costa Rica. Throughout the program, I will interact with EM international staff, local ministries, and community leaders, asking questions like: “How do I live my everyday life on mission?” and “How do I discover my purpose?” Every day/week looks different, so I must be ready to serve where needed most: teaching English, organizing kids’ programs, working on the farm, joining local church outreach initiatives, etc.
There are only three responses to missions: Go, Send, or Disobey. It is time for me to listen to God and Go. I don't know what He has in store for me after this trip, whether that be a lifetime of missions, or not; only time will tell. I just know that it is time for me to answer God's call, take a leap of faith, and trust that He will be with me along the way.
True, total dependence on God is something I have been struggling with lately and this trip will teach me just that. I will spend six months immersed in a culture that is entirely different than my own. Away from family, friends, and loved ones; away from familiarity. Please pray for me, the ministry I will have in the third world countries, and the work God will do in my life during my time there!
