About the Student

Kervens lives in a small shelter with his brother. His father is unwilling to care for him at all and his mother is living in the States but has no job. The only person who ever supported his education was his aunt, but she died in the earthquake leaving him and his brother to fend for themselves. Kervens and his brother currently sell soda and juice on the street just to make enough to get by, but this doesn't leave them enough to make it through school. This scholarship will enable him to graduate high school after which he hopes to attend trade school to become a mechanic.

Updates

February 10, 2016

Kervens is now in his second year of the program, and he will be graduating this year. He says he’s been studying frequently, and he looks forward to completing his final exams. His favorite subject is philosophy and his least favorite subject is math. He still lives with his brother and their only source of income remains the small drink stand they have on the street. When he’s not studying or selling on the street, he enjoys listing to music and chilling with his friends. He likes to work on cars, and he will occasionally spend his free time helping out a local mechanic to prepare for his future career as a mechanic.

Why Education Matters

Education empowers. EM's Education Scholarships help provide necessary education and mentorship for teenagers and young adults who need a "hand up" towards a better life that presents opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
