This summer, we will send our first IMMERSION team to Southeast Asia to work alongside ReachAcross ministries in predominantly Islamic communities. To give you an idea of what the trip may look like, here are a some words and photos from volunteers who have served in this area before!
"I think that the biggest lesson that I learned while abroad was that when you are in a culture, to fully embrace it and to live as they do. This doesn't mean to give up your faith, but to not constantly say, 'well, in America we do this...' or 'Oh man, I'm really craving that certain food.' The time spent abroad is so short compared to the rest of our lives. It's a time to be stretched and challenged and thrown out of our comfort zones. If they want you to shower three times a day, then shower three times a day. If they are extremely honest with you, you be extremely honest with them. It's crucial for learning about cross-cultural ministry: wherever you are, be all there."
"Relationship building has been slow, but it's happening in God's timing. We haven't befriended everyone, but I know that we are being placed into the lives that He sees fit."
"Education is our way of ministry. Because in this culture, you cannot just go up to someone and speak the name of Jesus. But you can show them his love, especially in education. Because it is something that they cannot refuse, no matter their religion. This is why you are here—to act out the love of Christ to these children that their parents may also see and know the truth."
