A mission trip is a faith-based volunteer service experience—usually 1 week for group trips or 1 to 9 months for more immersive, cross-cultural trips—where participants leave their normal setting to serve alongside a local community, church, or ministry already doing the work of coming alongside those in need.
At Experience Mission, a mission trip is not about coming with your own agenda of what you will do. Instead, it's an invitation to join what God's already doing in a community, guided by local partners who know the needs and priorities better than anyone coming in from the outside. This distinction of prioritizing people over our own ideas or projects shapes everything about how we set up a mission trip!
Depending on the community and the season, a team might work alongside a local partner on manual labor or construction projects, help with a kids' program, assist with food distribution, support disaster recovery work, or serve in an existing ministry's daily operations. The specific tasks vary by location. What stays consistent is the posture: teams show up as guests and learners first, working under the direction of local ministry partners and community leaders who set the agenda.
This is a meaningful difference from a volunteer vacation or a one-off service project. At EM, a mission trip includes preparation before the trip, guided reflection during it, and intentional debrief afterward. Our goal is that serving on a mission trip forms participants into people who are ready to love their neighbors in new ways back home and beyond.
The line isn't really about the activities included. Plenty of trips include a service component, and plenty of mission trips involve having fun or experiencing a new place for the first time. The difference is posture and purpose. At EM, we see mission trip participants as guests entering an established community, not customers purchasing an experience. A mission trip prioritizes relationships and connecting with communities, rather than being centered around a traveler's or group's desired itinerary. Whether you spend your trip repairing someone's home, cleaning out a ministry's home base, or playing games with local kids, it's the relationships you form that will be remembered most!
EM also builds spiritual formation and reflection into the trip itself. We do this through daily devotional times, nightly debriefing and worship, and regular prayer throughout the day. When we serve with open ears and open hands for what God is doing in this community, these experiences can shape our lives in new ways long after the end of our week, month, or year of serving.
EM offers a few different mission trip lengths, each suited to a different kind of commitment:
Week-long group trips tend to focus on a specific service project or outreach alongside a partner ministry. Longer programs allow for immersion into a community's daily rhythm, language, and culture.
EM's group trips are open to youth groups, college groups, adult teams, and families. Allowable team sizes range from 6 people to 60+, depending on the community and activities involved. IMMERSION and Gap Year programs are built for individual young adults, ages 18 to 30, joining together as a team, who want an extended experience longer than a week-long trip. No prior missions experience is required for any EM trips! Cross-cultural training materials and necessary preparation info are all shared well before the trip to prepare you to serve well once you arrive.
EM is an interdenominational Christian nonprofit, and our trips are open to participants and groups from a range of Christian traditions, including both Protestant and Catholic backgrounds. Faith is central to how EM frames the mission trip experience. Still, we are intentional about not treating a mission trip as an opportunity to import specific beliefs into a community. EM believes God is already present and at work in every community long before we arrive. Any participating mission team's role is to join in and participate in the good things already happening there.
Every EM trip partners with a local church, ministry, or established organization that already works or serves year-round in that community. We call this "joining a community in motion." That local partnership is also a safety structure, where local staff or partners understand the context, coordinate logistics, and guide the work. All communities are safe to serve in, with guidance always given on the ground for how to stay safe in places where volunteers should not roam free. Many mission trips are facilitated completely by members of the local community, while others are facilitated by EM Field Staff, who train specifically to serve in a given community for a season, helping volunteers engage and serve well.
Most of what distinguishes EM is not what we do in a given community but how we seek to serve, which can be summarized as EM's 7 Healthy Service Principles:
These principles are why you won't hear EM talking about "saving," "fixing," or "rescuing" others when describing a trip. And it's why local partners and ministries always set the priorities for the work we do.
EM mission trip participants are asked to enter with the posture of a listener and learner, not just a helper. This looks like engaging cross-cultural settings with humility, building real relationships with local partners and community members, and reflecting on how the experience might change their daily life once they're home. In this way, it is our sincere hope that the mission trip itself is one part of a longer arc towards a life of love for your neighbors wherever you are.
