In January 2010, a massive earthquake brought down the most populated area of the small Caribbean country of Haiti. It left wide scale death and destruction in its wake. With the country already the poorest in the Western Hemisphere, many believed it may never recover. With unemployment at about 80% and thousands living in tent cities, it is still an ongoing struggle to survive and create a meaningful life in the country.
But in the midst of this, there are people who have hope. They carry on and believe that the younger generation in Haiti has the ability to change the country for the better. In Haiti, we partner with a group of young men called the Yung Goddis ("Young Men of God") who are actively serving their community in the midst of formidable challenges. Our partnership with them is a great source of hope, and they continue to grow as leaders in their community. Haiti is also the site of the start of something new for EM. In the next few months, we are launching our Education and Microloan Initiatives designed to equip Haitian youth for the future and help families gain sustainable income.
Mission teams that come to Haiti work alongside Yung Goddis on home repair and building projects, as well as building relationships with children and families who live in Carrefour area through Kids Club and other activities. A week in Haiti will change your entire perspective on life, and few are left the same.
