On a trip to Haiti this summer, we were able to catch up with two EM Education Scholarship recipients, Herby and Ronaldson. Here's an update about their schooling and a little bit more about their lives in Haiti.
At ten-years-old, Herby finds himself completely orphaned. His father abandoned him before he was born and his mother was tragically killed in the January 2010 earthquake, which hit the city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, when he was only seven-years-old.
Left with an aunt to take care of him, he was brought into her care. However, Herby was the third child brought into the care of his aunt, making it a struggle for her to meet the children's most basic of needs, let alone tuition for school. Because of the lack of income, Herby missed an entire year of school.
Last year, Herby was accepted into the Experience Mission education program and received a scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year. Through this scholarship, Herby has been able to receive a better education than ever before. He has been given the opportunity to learn and grow and discover his unique talents and abilities.
Herby's favorite subject is Social Studies. He particularly enjoys learning about his home country of Haiti, as he wishes to one day help his country become a better place.
Since infancy, Ronaldson has been living with his aunt, due to his parents' lack of ability to care for him.
With his aunt struggling to make ends meet herself, finding the means to give Ronaldson a quality education has always been a challenge.
Today, Ronaldson is 14-years-old and has been able to attend school for the past year due to a scholarship awarded by the Experience Mission Education Program. The scholarship raised for Ronaldson has provided tuition costs, supplies, uniforms, daily meals, and transportation to and from school.
Because of the scholarship, Ronaldson has been given the opportunity to continue his education and sharpen his skills in his favorite subject of math. It has also improved Ronaldson's self-esteem and motivation to strive to be the best person he can be and do what he can to help others.
Ronaldson dreams to one day become a doctor to help people and offer them hope.
