Atlanta Mission Trips

On Sunday afternoon, we welcomed mission trip volunteer teams from Michigan and Ohio. The excitement in their eyes was just what we needed. We had a great week ahead...

Monday morning we sent the teams out to morning projects. Like every week, we had a team at Kroc Day Camp, Capital View Apartments (to paint), and Peachcrest Boys and Girls Club. The new project this week was at the Salvation Army Red Shield. The Red Shield is a transition shelter for the homeless here in Atlanta. Each morning I took a group to help the residents with their daily chores. I was amazed at the teams. Whether it was them making assembly lines to clean about 100 chairs in 20 minutes, or using the end of brooms to Windex the tallest windows, they knocked out the entire chores list in two hours!

The afternoons were filled with Kid's Club—a ministry that fills up my heart more and more each day we're here. Each day we were blown away by the high energy volunteers. Never once did they turn down a piggy-back ride request or a foursquare game or nail painting party. They took such initiative with their Bible story lessons as well as crafts—it blessed us to see how important this was to the teams and all the hard work they put into it.

My highlight of the week came on Wednesday. A group and I accompanied Mr. Charles (a Salvation Army church member) to his weekly breakfast club at Lakewood Christian Manor—a local assisted living home. Two team members led a devotion, we chatted with many residents, and closed with singing Amazing Grace and Come Thou Fount. (Thanks to the team for compensating for my lack of singing abilities!) The residents took us in like old friends—making us feel at home and telling us about their lives. I met Mr. Sammy who was so wise and made me realize that even though we may have been there to minister to them, we can be ministered to as well. He was such a tangible display of the love and redemption of Jesus Christ. I look forward to continuing this ministry throughout the summer.

That is just one example of how the relationships we made this week were so impacting in our lives. This summer I continue to learn how important people are and through these people and our amazing teams we have learned how to love people well.

To all of this week's volunteers, may you go out with the passion for serving that you had here and make an impact for Christ in your hometowns. We have witnessed the many talents that you have and I know the Lord is going to multiply it in the days to come!
