My Story
From the time I was little, I have known that I was made to help people or love on them in some way. From my parents to my teachers, I always wanted to do what I could to help. (Looking back, my 10-year-old self's way of "helping" might have gotten in the way more often than not ;). I was fascinated by people in other places and loved learning about different cultures in school. It wasn't until I was older that I realized that my love for people and my love for new places was a call to mission work.
In recent years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve on a number of mission trips. As I was returning home to Colorado from college in Nebraska this week, I passed the first place I ever went on a mission trip: Julesburg, Colorado. I took the exit and drove through the quiet little town, passed the building we slept on the floor in, the grassy park we held frogs in, and the church we served in. I went on that trip expecting to have something to give, but rather, I was given the chance to develop a much deeper relationship with God and a much deeper knowledge of myself. That faith in God is what got me through middle school and high school; at times, my own heart was a mission field of it's own. God never failed to pull me back in no matter how far I wandered. I don't know what I would've done without that hope and that peace. It breaks my heart to think about how many people have never heard the stories of Jesus or don't know that they are loved by Him.
Since my trip to Julesburg in seventh grade, I have traveled a variety of places on missions trips. Each trip had a different focus, whether kids ministry, construction, inner-city work, or something else. As different as each place we visited and what we were doing was, the one commonality was the transformation on the hearts of everyone involved. God moves in incredible ways when we pay attention and fervently seek Him. He is merciful and mighty and loves without limits. I have been blessed with a unique opportunity to take a semester off from school and travel over 9,000 miles to the southern region of Africa where I will spend six months living, serving, and growing in my relationship with Christ. I am so incredibly excited to see what God has in store for the six months I will be in Africa.
I heard this quote months ago and it still resonates with me deeply because it is the very heart of everything I want to do and everything I want to be, both right now in the United States, and in Africa... "I have accepted that I alone cannot change the world, only Jesus can do that. But I can change the world for one person and if that one person sees the love of Christ in me, then it is worth every second." -Unknown
As I prepare for this trip in the coming months, your support would mean the world to me. Financially, through donations, sponsorships, or t-shirts, but even more importantly, spiritually, through your prayers for safety, comfort, and discernment. God is so good!
Love, Michaela
