About the Student

Joel is a survivor of the 2010 earthquake, and he was able to use this horrific experience as a moment to rethink his priorities in life. He reasoned that his life had been spared for a reason, and he became determined to make something of himself. However for Joel this is not easy because his family is battling poverty like so many others the Port-au-Prince region. Joel is one of 8 siblings who have been raised by their father alone since their mother died in 2004. With so many kids, it"s difficult for their father to pay for their education and because of this not one person in his family has graduated high school. Joel is determined to be the first one. He says when he"s not in school he feels like his life is "going nowhere." In his free time Joel enjoys hanging out with his friends and playing soccer or eating his favorite food which is rice and bean sauce. His father is a mason so he's grown up around construction work and he would love to one day be a construction engineer. This scholarship will enable him to graduate high school bringing him one step closer to his goal.

February 10, 2016

Joel is also in has last year of high school, and he says he will be very proud to become the first member of his family to receive a high school diploma. He has already begun preparing for his final exams, and he is confident he will pass them all without a problem. His family is doing well, and he was happy to see one of his sisters get married this week. He continues to help out with EM teams, and he hopes to stay involved with EM in the future. After graduation he would love to study mechanical engineering. We asked him if he had any message for his supporters, and expressed how thankful he was for all of your support and he promised to do his very best to get a good score on his exams. He said he will pray that God will keep you all strong and help you to continue to help others.

Why Education Matters

Education empowers. EM's Education Scholarships help provide necessary education and mentorship for teenagers and young adults who need a "hand up" towards a better life that presents opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
