Velineda lives with her mother and three sisters. Their father passed away and no one in the family is formally employed, so they are in a very challenging financial situation. Still she is determined to complete her college education. She is quiet but very intelligent and motivated, always maintaining excellent grades. We are certain that there is a bright future ahead of Velineda, and the completion of her education will be a massive step in the right direction. This will be her third EM scholarship and it will enable her to complete her second year of college.

Velineda is still in college and this scholarship will enable her to complete her second year. She says that some of her classes this year have been challenging for her, but she is still getting good grades. Her family is doing well, but her mother was forced to spend some time in the hospital because of a severe injury. Thankfully she is recovering well, but this was a significant financial hardship for the family. Everyone in the family still lacks formal employment so they are forced to survive off of the income her mom makes selling various items in a small street stand. Her goal after graduation is to work for a local non-government organization and begin saving money to one day start her own business. Since she is in college, we asked her if she would be willing to help the program by mentoring some of the younger high school girls. She accepted and said that because she has received so much support she is happy to have the opportunity to reinvest in the program.

Why Education Matters
Education empowers. EM's Education Scholarships help provide necessary education and mentorship for teenagers and young adults who need a "hand up" towards a better life that presents opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
