About the Student

Maermine’s father abandoned her and her mother when she was born, and her mother tragically died when she was only 2 years old. After her mother’s death she was adopted by her godmother who raised her. She is the mother of a 3 year old son, and sadly she was kicked out of her godmother’s house when she became pregnant as a teenager. The child’s father does not help her and she can’t find a job, so she’s been in a very rough position. In spite of the many challenges she faces in life, she is determined to get her education and position herself to care for her son. Currently, her son is living with an old friend of her mother’s because she doesn’t have the means to care for him, and she is living at a friend’s house where she is trying to go to school. Often the money is not enough and she has been missing many classes, so this scholarship will enable her to continue her education and give her hope of establishing herself and raising her son.

Why Education Matters

Education empowers. EM's Education Scholarships help provide necessary education and mentorship for teenagers and young adults who need a "hand up" towards a better life that presents opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
