Moving in the Whispers – Rehoboth, Namibia

Blog Home

The 6-Month Africa Immersion team is transitioning out of Rehoboth, Namibia, where they spent 6 weeks, and on to the small agrarian country of Lesotho. Here are a few reflections and stories from team members during their time in Rehoboth.

Rachel Chick (above): "Since we first arrived in Rehoboth, Namibia, the peace of God has been put on my heart. Psalm 46:10 says, 'Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.'Throughout our time in Africa, but especially in Namibia, God has asked me to be still. When I am still, when everything stops for just a moment, I see God and all the work he has been doing. By being still, I have seen him being honored—by nature and animals on the farms, as well as during the many youth services we have attended. Sometimes we spend so much time trying to seek God, when all he wants is for us to be still."

Rachel Kosakowski (above left): "This last week I have been reminded of how strong and real prayer is in our daily lives. I so often take for granted that I have the Holy Spirit living inside of me, ready to intercede on my behalf. I was privileged to be a part of several prayer walks where the undeniable presence of the spiritual realm was extremely powerful. Spiritual warfare is ever-present here and we must be in tune with the Holy Spirit's guidance and promptings every day as we go to battle for our Savior."Ã'Æ'‚Ã'‚

Anna Gainey (above middle): "I have learned about the silent growing relationships that build on simple matters of life."Ã'Æ'‚Ã'‚

Mary Kate Moore (above right): "Two big, beautiful brown eyes looked up into mine. The small grade-four girl smiled up at me. 'Teacher, will you please be my mother?' she asked, grabbing onto my fingers. My heart was overwhelmed with love, but it also ached with sadness. This little one was longing for love, perhaps because she does not receive it at home. We are all a lot like this little girl, searching for love that this world has denied us. But we can find comfort in Christ, knowing that he holds our hand tightly. He is our Father who loves us from Heaven. I squeezed the girl's fingers, 'I will always love you as if I were your mother.' Even in America."

Emily Garcia (above): "I woke up a bit earlier one morning this past week to watch the sunrise over Rehoboth with my host brother. We made coffee with far too much sugar for our own good and sat on the stoop, waiting patiently. As we sat quietly, the beauty of the soft pink and orange beams came pouring through the clouds, and as much as we tried to describe it, there just weren't any words that could capture what we saw. It's moments like this when I reflect on how blessed I am to be here, living and learning among my friends and family. Time after time I'm amazed at how God has placed me here in Rehoboth for so many reasons, and I'm realizing more than ever, as much as God moves in big ways, he is moving in the whispers. In the times we least expect it, his hands are busy at work."

Chelsey Morris (above right): "2 Corinthians 12:9,10 says, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. This is why, for Christ's sake, I rejoice in weaknesses.' Looking at my time in Namibia, all I can see are the ways my weakness has been completely dwarfed in the shadow of God's strength. This has easily been the hardest part of this trip for me, but it is also the most sure I have been that God has me here for this exact time. Every time I feel like I have reached my limit mentally or emotionally, I am reminded that it has never and will never depend on my ability or on my strength. I am not here to be told how much I can do for Rehoboth, but rather here to be stripped of my pride and made fully dependent on God for every minute of every day. It seems that after generations of planting and watering, by missionaries far braver than I, it might just be harvest time in Namibia. People are hungry for the truth, youth are looking for answers. The spirit is moving in Rehoboth."Ã'Æ'‚Ã'‚
