"Dumela" from Maphutseng! We are currently three weeks into our journey here in the Kingdom of Lesotho, and it has been nothing short of incredible! I mean, come on, we are staying in a mountain kingdom, one of the last few kingdoms on planet Earth—how often can one say that?! We truly are in God’s country here.
Each day, I have had the privilege of watching the sun both rise and set, as well as the amazing stars and moon each night. It’s crazy, the longer you look at the stars the more spectacular they become. I have often told myself “just five more minutes and then I’m going to bed...” Sure enough, half an hour later, I’m still outside, just taking in each moment, each shooting star, trying to not let even one pass me by. When I awake in the morning, I read my Bible outside and within the hour the sun starts to peak over the mountains. The moment its rays stretch over the top, I can instantly feel the warmth on my face, kissing my cheeks. More than this though, I can feel God’s faithfulness.
In being here, I have realized that there are so many things in each day that we take for granted, that I personally take for granted. The sunrise is a perfect example of this. In Job 38-41, I find that God has a sense of humor. There are so many miracles that God performs in each day, and he begins to question Job, asking him if he can perform even one of these simple tasks. “Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water? Do you send lightening bolts on their way? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?” (Job 38:34-35) Of course, Job’s answer is no. We, as mere humans, cannot even fathom how to make the sky rain or how to hang the sun in the sky, let alone how to make the Earth spin on its axis. To us, these are just daily occurrences that happen. But truth be told, nothing just happens. God has created a beautiful masterpiece for us to enjoy, infinitely intricate in so many ways.
While harvesting beans for hours on end each day here in Lesotho, I catch myself looking up in awe of all that God has created. At any hour of the day, there is new beauty to look at, new beauty to be realized. This in itself is enough to make me smile. To think that God could have made the Earth entirely plain, with all landscape looking the same, and yet He chose for there to be such diversity. He chose to create mountains and valleys, rivers and oceans, glaciers and volcanos. He created all of this for us to enjoy, to truly be mesmerized by.
In short, if you asked me how my time in Lesotho has been so far, I would say it has been spent in utter amazement and thankfulness.
The fact that I get to know the God who created this world on a personal level is surreal, and leaves me humbled. How can one look at the beauty of this Earth and not believe?
To finish, I am grateful for the opportunity to spend time in another country, one as beautiful as Lesotho, for the food we eat each and everyday and the work that goes into preparing it (I now have a whole new appreciation for beans :), and for the sunrise and sunset each day serving as constant reminders of God’s faithfulness.
